and Painting Club and the Set Construction
Club will be meeting via the morning
announcements or see Mr. Kostis, Mr. Suesser
or Ms. Connors.
Theatre Arts
and the Pit Orchestra will begin when
auditions for the show begin (December)
National Junior Honor Society
This club, while being run by Mrs.
West-Shank, has
members participate in leadership roles that
involve community service. There are only
ninth grade members. There is a President,
Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary who
are most active in community service. We
meet every first and third Wednesday from
2:45 until 3:50 in the cafeteria.
REQUIREMENTS: Maintain a 3.75 for 6
consecutive marking periods. Then fill out
an application, the application is reviewed
by a 5 member committee.
Math Team
The Math Team is for all students who excel
at math and enjoy a challenge. The students
work out various math problems within a
certain time limit. The are five meets in
which P.J. Gelinas competes against other
schools. It is enjoyable for all that
participate.

Science Olympiad
The
Science Olympiad Team, coached by Mr.
Vorwald, and Mr. Suesser, Mr. Daguerre and
Ms. Rosen
will begin meeting on Friday afternoons in
room 220. The team will compete against
other schools in Suffolk County in 18 events
such as bridge building, flight, egg drop,
life science lab, rocks and minerals,
battery buggy, and mission possible. Each
event is unique and requires students to
learn academic content, science, or
technical skills. The events are intended to
challenge students to their potential while
encouraging students to have fun while
learning science.
Film Club
The Film Club is open for all students. The
goal is to provide an outlet for students to
view domestic and international film
classics, as well as recent critically
acclaimed films.

Vocal Vikings
Vocal Vikings is a select choral
group open to all 8th and 9th graders who
are chosen through an audition process.
Members are accepted from all of the
performing groups. The Vikings sing at a
variety of functions, both in and out of
school. Rehearsals are once a week after
school or in the evening. This is to help
accommodate the many talented members who
also shine on the athletic fields and/or are
involved in co-curricular activities. See

Miniatures
The Miniature Models and Tabletop gaming
club has been created due to the interest
expressed by a number of students here at
P.J. Gelinas JHS. The purpose of the club
is to provide a common meeting place for
students interested in miniature painting,
tabletop gaming, model building and any
related arts and crafts. In general, we are
looking to have fun and share with others
our enjoyment in these various hobbies. We
look forward to developing the scope of our
activities and the skills and interest of
our crafts people.
Students Advocating a Viable Earth
(S.A.V.E.)
The Students Advocating a Viable
Earth S.A.V.E., is Gelinas' environmental
club. It is open to students of all
grades who enjoy science and the outdoors.
Its members participate in numerous of
activities such as beach clean-ups, organize
collections for local animal shelters, and
raise money to adopt endangered animals.
They also run a series of workshops
involving anything from photography to rock
climbing. They are currently planning
numerous outings to various state parks, a
series of bicycle riding and maintenance
seminars, and a multi-day camping trip.

Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble consists of instrumental
music students who play the trumpet,
trombone, saxophone, piano, bass, guitar and
drums. The group rehearses Wednesday
afternoons from 3:00 to 3:45. Program
content contains the study of this unique
American idiom's musical elements, including
a beginning introduction to improvisation.
The group performs at the annual Suffolk
County Jazz festival in February, and a
Spring concert in May. This activity also
serves as prepatory program for student
participation in the three existing jazz
ensembles at Ward Melville High School. See

Foreign Language Honor Society
9th grade students with an "A" average
(cumulative final grades of 7th
through 8th, and the first marking period of
9th) Students will have to make an ethnic
dish, peer tutor and decorate for foreign
language week. See Mr. Scripture for details
The ART Club
The Art Club will have numerous activities
for members to be involved with. The
students will be exposed to various art
materials and techniques such as page
making, print making, and stained glass. See
Ms. Connors for details.
Theatre Arts
Theatre Arts is open to all 8th and 9th
grade students. Students work together on
many different activities: singing, dancing,
and acting. The ultimate goal is the annual
school musical held in March. It is a
program where each child has the benefit of
experiencing long lasting memories. See Mr.
Gelfer and Mr. DePersio for details.
PIT Orchestra
To provide a fill PIT orchestra
experience for students and furnish the
accompaniment for the school musical
production. Students must be accomplished
musicians performing on at least a NYSSMA
level 4 on their instrument. All students
must audition for Mr. Gelfer and or Mrs.
Minelli.
Gelinas World Music Club
To study and perform various ethnic
music styles. All though a performance based
club, no requirements are necessary.
Students may play guitars, hand percussion
and varying "non-traditional" school
instruments. Live performances, concerts,
field trips will all be part of this ethnic
musical experience. See Mr. Gelfer for
details.
Yearbook
Students produce a high quality Yearbook,
from covers and themes to layouts and
graphics. In addition to theme
development, selecting layouts, using
outstanding photography, creative headlines,
unique designs and effective use of limited
color. Staff is challenged to produce
exciting and professional looking
publications for their classmates. See Mrs.

The Ward Melville Heritage Youth Corps
The Ward Melville Heritage Youth Corps is a
student volunteer group which operates under
the auspices of the Ward Melville Heritage
Organization. Members are dedicated to
perpetuating the good works of Ward and
Dorothy Melville by fostering stewardship
and appreciation of local history and the
environment.
The Youth Corps includes
community residents, teachers,
administrators and students who are
interested in making the environment and
history fun, interactive and hands-on.
The Literary Magazine
The
Gelinas Literary Magazine is a student-run
publication that showcases writing and
artwork from students in 7th , 8th ,and 9th
grade. Members of the club will be involved
in the editorial/magazine production
process. All students are invited to submit
their work throughout the school year for
consideration in the magazine. Faculty
